Students undertaking laboratory based units are required to complete a health and safety induction and assessment program. The program may be specific to the laboratory, discipline, or task and may be in one or more of the following formats.
Analytical Electron Microscope Facility, X-Ray Analysis Facilities
Level 1, R Block GP
Students undertaking units in these laboratories are to complete task-specific health and safety induction programs during relevant training sessions.
Life Sciences Laboratories
Q Block GP
Students undertaking units in these laboratories are to complete a web based induction and assessment program. The program is accessed through your Personal Profile on QUT Virtual. Students undertaking laboratory work in Q Block should complete the program at the start of first semester only (or second semester if commencing mid-year). Students that are enrolled in Life Sciences (LSB, LQB), and Pharmacy (SCB) units that will attend practicals in Q block must read the Student Laboratory Manual [DOC 138Kb] and submit correct answers to at least 9 of the 10 quiz questions drawn from the manual. As this is in preparation for using the laboratory facility, submit the quiz questions prior to attending your first practical. After completing the quiz, print out the confirmation sheet and bring it with you to the practical. You will be asked to show this confirmation sheet when you enter or attend the practical.
Complete the steps:
- Read the rules
- Complete the quiz
- Confirm that you will abide by the rules.
Natural Resource Sciences Laboratories
R Block GP
Students undertaking units in these laboratories are to complete a local health and safety induction program at the first practical session in the laboratories.
Chemistry Laboratories
E Block GP
Students undertaking units in these laboratories are to complete a local health and safety induction at the first practical session in the laboratories.
Physics Laboratories
Q Block GP
Students undertaking units in these laboratories complete a local induction at the first practical session in the physics laboratories in the building. Details of the Laboratory Rules and Emergency Procedures are contained in the First Year Physics Laboratory Resource Manual, available from the QUT Bookshop. Students using the radiography and other specialised laboratories will receive specific induction programs and instructions.
Undergraduate Science Laboratories
W Block GP
Students undertaking units in these laboratories are to complete a web based induction and assessment program. The program is accessed through the QUT Online Learning and Teaching (OLT) site. Students are able to access the OLT site through any of the units undertaken in these laboratories, but are required to complete the program only once each year.
Undergraduate Science Laboratory
E Block CA
Students undertaking units in this laboratory (CA E101) are to complete a local health and safety induction and assessment at the first practical session in the laboratory.
Lab Coats
Particular attention should be paid to the requirements for laboratory coats. For Science units, the Faculty of Science and Technology strongly recommends that 100% cotton laboratory coats are used, and coats or gowns with a high proportion of flammable synthetic material (greater than 25% synthetic) are strongly discouraged. White cotton theatre gowns are preferred for medical sciences units. Lab coats and gowns may be purchased through the Student Guild Campus Shops, who also rent lab coats and safety glasses for $2 for 4 hours.
Please see For Research Students for postgraduate health and safety matters relating to the Faculty of Science and Technology.
